Frequently Asked Questions
How much food should I give my puppy?
The amount of food you can give your puppy can be found in the feeding table on the back of the packaging. To read this, you need the following information:
- Puppy age
- Weight at adult age
We explain it with an example. We have a Border Collie puppy, a male, 3 months old. We have the following data:
- Puppy age: 3 months
- Weight at adult age: 14 to 20 kilograms*
To calculate the amount of food, we look in the row (age) at 3 to 4 months, and in the column (weight at adult age) at 15 kg and 20 kg. The average adult weight of a Border Collie male is 14 to 20 kg, averaging 17 kilograms. We can then read from the Profine Puppy Chicken feeding table that the puppy may receive about 165 grams of food per day.
*To determine your puppy’s adult weight, you can base it on the weight of the mother if you have a female puppy, or the weight of the father if you have a male puppy. If you don’t have this information, you can find the average adult weight in the breed standard.
Are your kibbles pressed or crunchy?
Our dog and cat kibbles are crunchy (extruded).
I have a puppy, should I give him Puppy food or Junior Large Breed food?
The choice between Puppy food or Junior Large Breed food depends on the adult weight of the animal.
Puppies that have an adult weight of 1 – 25 kilograms receive Puppy food.
Puppies that have an adult weight of 26 kilograms or more receive Junior Large Breed food (Note: these puppies receive Puppy food until they are 3 months old; after 3 months, they can switch to Junior Large Breed food)
My dog has a food allergy (or intolerance), which option is best for me to give him?
If your dog suffers from a food allergy or intolerance, Profine Adult Salmon & Potatoes (or Profine Adult Large Breed Salmon & Potatoes if you have a large breed dog) is the best option to give.
Salmon is rich in omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids, which support healthy skin and coat. Since a food allergy or intolerance often results in skin and coat problems, a diet that supports the skin and coat is recommended.
If your dog is allergic to salmon, you can give Profine Adult Lamb & Potatoes. This variant, like Profine Adult Salmon & Potatoes, is hypoallergenic; meaning it contains only one protein source. You can choose to enrich the diet with *salmon oil to support the skin and coat.
*A dog allergic to salmon can still be given salmon oil. In an allergic reaction, the body reacts to the proteins; salmon oil contains no proteins, only fats.
How can I best switch to Profine?
When you want to switch to Profine dog or cat food, the best approach depends on the type of food you are currently feeding. In this case, there are 3 different options:
- From dry kibble to dry kibble. When switching from one dry kibble to another, it is best to do this gradually. You can transition to the new food over about 7 to 9 days. You can follow the schedule above. If you have a dog with a sensitive stomach, you can choose to feed your dog fresh meat or Profine wet food for one week first, and then switch directly to the dry kibble.
- From pressed kibble to dry kibble. When switching from pressed kibble to dry kibble, it is best to do this all at once; gradual mixing is not necessary in this case. If you have a dog with a sensitive stomach, you can choose to feed your dog fresh meat for one week first, and then switch directly to the dry kibble.
- From fresh meat to dry kibble. When switching from fresh meat to dry kibble, it is best to do this all at once. If you have a dog with a sensitive digestive system, feed Profine wet food for one week, then switch directly to the dry kibble.
In the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and cats, there are ‘good’ bacteria, the gut flora, which are necessary for digesting food. The gut flora adapts to the diet a dog or cat receives. When you want to switch your pet to a different food, the gut flora must adjust; only when the gut flora is fully adapted to the new food can it be optimally digested.
How long should I feed my puppy Profine Puppy food or Profine Junior Large Breed food?
The weight of your puppy at adult age determines when you can switch your puppy to adult dog food. Small dogs reach their adult weight earlier than large dogs, so you can switch a small dog to adult food sooner. Below you can find the age at which you can switch your puppy to adult dog food:
- Small (1-10 kg): 10 to 12 months
- Medium (10-25 kg): 12 to 15 months
- Large (25-45 kg): 15 to 18 months
- Giant (45 kg or heavier): 24 months
How long should I feed my kitten Profine Kitten food?
Kittens are considered adults at the age of 12 months. Until then, you can feed a kitten Profine Kitten food. After 12 months, you can switch to food for adult cats.
